Mike Barno, DMD

General Dentist

Dr Barno joined Brickyard Dental Group in 2013 after serving for five years as a dentist in the United States Army. Dr. Barno received his BS in Biology from The Citadel and attended dental school at the Medical University of South Carolina on a full scholarship. In between undergraduate and dental school, Dr Barno studied Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University.

Following dental school, Dr Barno joined the U.S. Army Dental Corps and completed an Advanced General Dentistry residency that focused heavily on comprehensive dentistry, surgery, and complex treatment planning. He is an active member of the SC Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

His professional interests lie in full mouth reconstruction, implant surgery, and complex cases. Dr Barno is the only general dentist in the Midlands who routinely uses a dental operating microscope for his procedures. The microscope allows him to perform procedures with a level of precision that is unparalleled in the profession of dentistry.

Since 2020, Dr Barno has been adjunct clinical faculty at the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University. He trains post-doctoral dental residents on implant surgery, complex treatment planning, and microscope enhanced dentistry.

In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. He is an accomplished sculptor and owner of Star of the West Sculpture Studio. He and his family live in Blythewood and are members of Blythewood Presbyterian Church. Dr Barno’s wife, Michaela, is the manager of the Blythewood Farmer’s Market.

Dr Barno is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and was awarded the Combat Action Badge and the Bronze Star Medal for his service in combat with the 25th Infantry Division. During his year in Afghanistan, he worked with a team of amazing medics, surgeons, and physicians to manage not only traditional dental emergencies, but blast injuries and head and neck trauma as well. He also served as the triage officer for two real world mass casualty events.  His story of his time in Afghanistan was documented by the Witness to War Project and can be seen here.

He is a graduate of the US Army Combat Casualty Care Course and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology’s Forensic Dentistry course, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry’s yearlong implant MAXICOURSE at Augusta University.
